Midwestern Pet Foods Faces Class Action for Sportmix Pet Food Products Containing Excessive Levels of Aflatoxin

Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe LLP today launched an investigation into the recent recall of dog and cat food products made by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc.

Midwestern Pet Foods manufacturers and sells dog and cat food under several brand names, including Sportmix, Pro Pac, Nunn Better, and Splash Fat Cat. Midwestern advertises that the pet foods have “100% Guaranteed Taste & Nutrition” and “are subject to rigorous testing in independent laboratories to ensure quality nutrition and safety.” However, on December 30, 2020, the company recalled certain of its pet food products, which contained excessive and toxic levels of aflatoxin. The company updated the recall list to include several additional products on January 11, 2021. Canine and feline consumption of excessive amounts of aflatoxin can lead to serious health issues, including sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, and/or diarrhea. Prolonged and high exposure can lead to long-term liver issues and cause death.
